Finishing
Fundamental Drills - 1 Dribble Lay-up
Here is a simple competitive drill that works on lay-ups and changing direction.
Finishing - Power Lay-up
Many coaches and players believe that because a basketball player shoots close to the basket that the shot should go in the majority of the time. However the ability to finish near the basket is much more difficult that many people realize and should be a regular part of practice.
Baseline Drive and Follow to Closeout
This drill combines movement off penetration, defensive closeouts and 1 on 1 play. O1 begins at the top and passes to O2 on the wing.
Post Play-Shot Fake to Step Through
Great post players have great footwork. In the video clip the Russian post player, Andrey Vorontsevich, gives a great example of a shot fake to a step through move. There are several important points the player must execute if the move is to be effective against quality defenders.
Finishing - Hook Shots
Smaller players often have a difficult time finishing near the basket because their size does not allow them to rise above the defenders. However, in many cases smaller players are quick, good ball-handlers and are able to penetrate consistently. Smaller players need to develop finishes when a defender is near them, and before the defender gets to them. 0The "runner" is shot of choice if the player is able to get the shot away just before a defender gets to them. The "hook" is shot of choice when the driver is going to the basket and a defender is near them.
1 on 1 Lay-up vs. Defender
At the high school level a high percentage of shots are missed close to the basket. Players need to learn to score in traffic, against contact, using various finishes from different angles. Here is a simple drill to help your players improve in their ability to finish.
